Where it all began

2012 saw two friends, Matt & Luke, dreaming up an alcoholic beverage focused more on how you feel the next day, than how quickly you felt the alcohol. Like all good ideas formed over a beverage with a mate, it was parked for six years…

In 2018, Matt and Luke were once again sharing ideas, with Matt’s brother Guy included. With the rise of hard seltzers in the United States that focused on a ‘better alcohol option’ the old recipe was dusted off and put to the test on family and friends…

…they were onto something! The trio set about crafting a beverage they would be proud to share. This meant it had to be purposeful, sustainable and delicious.

After tasting hundreds of fruit profiles (including the now famous Lemon & Yuzu) and blending this with a neutral alcohol base, Aotearoa’s first hard sparkling was born.

Just as Native's mascot, the pīwakawaka, flutters about keeping a close eye on things, younger sister Brooke did not want to miss out and tasked herself with spreading the message across the country – joining the close-knit team.

The Vision

Can consumption become a force for good?

We reckon it can.

Since day one, we’ve been on a mission to find ways to enable thriving biodiversity, through everyday habits.

When we learnt that, globally, people spend $1.5 trillion USD on alcohol. And that, while many adults know the importance of living in a healthy/thriving environment, few of us are actively taking any action. We saw a cool opportunity to have a real impact that kept things really simple for people. Think: saving the world with Friday night drinks. How you ask? Good question.

There’s no single solution to the climate crisis we’re in. We’re believers in there are hundreds of small positive steps we can each make, every day, that can add up to a big difference. Which is why we‘re committed to making choices within our business that have a climate positive impact.

We also knew we could do more... ripple effect...

Through The 100 Club initiative we directly support the conservation of native species. We’re already on our way to growing 100 individual species from their tentative hatch, to being released into the wild.

We also partner with Trees that Count to help Kiwis to plant more native trees across Aotearoa and improve the environment we’re all part of.

Native is proud to have started from humble beginnings to now be stocked nationwide - from flagship liquor stores to all sorts of bars, cafes and restaurants. However, Native is most proud of our real fruit flavours – winning beer and wine festivals with what is being labelled by punters as NZ’s first true alcoholic sparkling water.
