Where it all began

In 2018, brothers Matt & Guy Hobson, alongside good friend Luke McBride, were dreaming up an alcoholic beverage focused more on how you feel the next day, than how quickly you felt the alcohol.

With the rise of hard seltzers in the USA, the trio focused on kiwi-fying seltzers, and creating a version that is 'better for your taste buds and the planet.'

This meant it had to be purposeful, sustainable and delicious.

After tasting hundreds of fruit profiles (including the now famous Lemon & Yuzu) and blending this pure sparkling water and natural sugar cane alcohol, Aotearoa’s first hard sparkling was born.

Just like Native's cheeky pīwakawaka mascot, younger sister Brooke did not want to miss out and tasked herself with spreading the message across the country – joining the close-knit family team.

The Vision

Can consumption become a force for good?

We reckon it can.

Since day one, we’ve been on a mission to find ways to enable thriving biodiversity, through everyday habits.

We need $700 Billion to reverse our impact on biodiversity each year. It's a scary number!
When we learnt that, globally, people spend double that on alcohol alone ($1.6 Trillion USD) we thought there has got to be a better way. While many people know the importance of living in a healthy/thriving environment, few of us are actively taking any action. We saw a cool opportunity to have a real impact that kept things really simple for people. Think: saving the world with Friday night drinks. How you ask? Good question.

There’s no single solution to the climate crisis we’re in. We’re believers in there are hundreds of small positive steps we can each make, every day, that can add up to a big difference. Which is why we‘re committed to making choices within our business that have a positive impact.

Through Native's The 100 Club initiative we directly support the conservation of 100 indiviudal native species. We’re already on our way to growing these little cuties from their tentative hatch, to being released into the wild.

We also partner with Trees that Count to help Kiwis to plant more native trees across Aotearoa.

Native is proud to have started from humble beginnings to now be stocked nationwide - from flagship liquor stores to all sorts of bars, cafes and restaurants. However, Native is most proud of our real fruit flavours – winning beer and wine festivals with what is being labelled by punters as NZ’s first true alcoholic sparkling water.
